Coming from a Gamasutra feature with Michael Pachter... As Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said to me in a recent email, “casual gamers are never buying consoles again.” If true, that would signal a sea change in the balance of power in the video game industry. No longer would companies like Microsoft and Sony and Nintendo hold the reins of power. Pachter never ceases to amaze me with his comments. He's not afraid to go out there and make a very bold statement, no matter how silly it sounds. Link

But it's not all bad news It seems even Nintendo isn’t immune from the economic crisis as the gaming giant publishes annual losses for the first time in its history. Nintendo has reported a loss of ?284 million for the financial year ending 31 March 2012, which equates to a 36.2 per cent fall on sales from the previous year. It’s the first time Nintendo has had to report losses, though the Japanese company has insisted it will continue “to pursue its basic strategy of ‘Gaming Population Expansion’ by offering compelling products that anyone can enjoy, regardless…

  • GAME woes all but over as Nintendo returns to store

Pandora's Tower to be stocked Just before the GAME Group went into administration, and perhaps partly because of, major videogames publishers pulled out of trading with the troubled UK retailer. Famously, Electronic Arts withdrew Mass Effect 3, so that the store chain missed out on the biggest launch of the year so far, and others acted similarly - some may say wisely too, considering that creditors have since been paid back a fraction of what they were owed. However, one of the biggest names to cease trading with GAME was Nintendo, which released a string of titles that would pass it by.
  • If Angry Birds had debuted on the Nintendo Game & Watch

A trip down memory lane Get your DeLorean out of the garage, we’re going back in time, and we’re taking the Angry Birds with us. A Swedish artist has taken the hugely popular mobile game and merged it with Nintendo’s Game & Watch device of the 1980’s. Remember those? In reality the dual screen would mean you’d lose sight of our feathered friends for a split second, but the concept is rather cute and certainly tugs at the nostalgic heartstrings. If you’re too young to remember the Nintendo Game & Watch, the handheld device was where the likes of Mario and…

  • Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Sells 1 Million in 5 Days

    Shaw
    16 May 2012 | 5:00 am
Minecraft was already a huge success on the PC, but it would seem the game blew away all expectations when ported over to Xbox Live Arcade. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition managed to sell one million copies in just five days of being released. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is being sold a $20 per download, so you can only imagine the hefty profit Mojang and the port developer, 4j Studios, has managed to accrue in this short amount of time. User statistics also shows that in this short period players have spent 5.2 million hours playing Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, have played 4 million total…
  • Diablo III Alternatives

    14 May 2012 | 5:00 am
It’s no secret that in past I have been skeptical of the quality of Blizzard’s third entry in the Diablo series, Diablo III. Participating in the beta hasn’t changed that, and I have been actively looking for alternatives to play. The fact that Diablo III’s aesthetics don’t match the style of the earlier Diablo titles, that there is no modding for the game, that there is no LAN multiplayer option and an always online DRM (even for single player), the 4 player capped co-op, the oversimplification of that game and its difficulty (i.e. lack of stat allocation), a pay-to-win atmosphere…
  • République Barely Meets its Funding Goal

    13 May 2012 | 5:00 am
Here we have a Kickstarter funding story that almost wasn’t a success. République is a very interesting game concept that certainly seems to have a lot of talent (developers behind the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Halo, and F.E.A.R.) and ambition behind it, but for quite a while it seemed that République’s Kickstarter wouldn’t meet its goal in time. The entire premise of the game is that the player doesn’t control the main character Hope directly, but instead by interacting with the environment (i.e. hacking into security systems) and giving her cues about what to do in certain…

  • Adventure Time Game Comes to DS/3DS this Fall

    9 May 2012 | 5:00 am
MATHEMATICAL! The first ever retail game for one of my favorite cartoons is slated to come out this fall. D3Publisher, Cartoon Network Enterprises, and WayForward will be behind Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! , which may very well be the best title for a video game ever. The plot behind this game (surprisingly enough) is that the Ice King has stolen Finn and Jake’s garbage. Wait! There’s more! He stole their garbage to construct a Garbage Princess, and that was enough to get Finn and Jake to adventure through the Land of Ooo to teach Ice King a lesson. Series…

After the break, there’s a fan-made advertisement for F-Zero on the 3DS. It’s incredible, and I want it. But no, it’s not real, no matter how much you want it to be. Oh look at that, I just made myself sad. Excuse me while I watch the video again and hope this will one day be a reality.

The Nintendo Way A New Generation – A New Revolution by Stavros Kokkineas Many times when I discuss with my friends what videogame company is the best, there are a lot of interesting and creative arguments thrown at each other. The final goal is to be able to get that other guy in our camp so we will have another ally on the way to a better world. Sony friends bring up the fact that the Japanese (ex-)giant successfully introduced the digital medium in the industry, with their Playstation console, and that they revolutionized how videogames were marketed, expanding the medium’s…

5 Reasons the FPS Genre Didn’t Soar On the Wii Despite Improved Controls by Courtney J. Lung The Wii’s new revolutionary controller rallied excitement for many gamers who loved shooters back in 2006. Packing an infra-red camera, the new remote allowed players to simply point at their screen to aim. The new set up offered speed and precision of a mouse without needing a desk. The Wii remote was ready to set a new standard for shooter games, but it never happened. Despite the controller’s perks, it failed to capture the shooter market. It’s wasn’t a complete loss.
